(iniziativa)* - Play On. Carrie Underwood conquista la vetta della classifica U.S.A

Vincitrice nel 2005 della quarta edizione di American Idol (sorta di X-Factor americano), Carrie Underwood si è presto imposta all’attenzione del pubblico e della critica americana rivelandosi come un’artista dalle notevoli doti vocali nonché interpretative. Il suo album d’esordio, Some Hearts, ha venduto 7 milioni e mezzo di copie, decretando il successo di hit quali Jesus, Take The Wheel, Before He Cheats e Wasted. Il 2007 è la volta di Carnival Ride (3 milioni di copie), i cui singoli estratti (So Small, All-American Girl, Last Name e Just A Dream) raggiungono tutti

la prima posizione nella classifica dei singoli country più venduti. Così come Cowboy Casanova, singolo apripista del nuovo cd, in cui Carrie mette in guardia un’altra donna dalle attenzioni di un uomo molto pericoloso (<<He’s the devil in disguise, a snake with blue eyes and he only comes out at night, gives you feelings you don’t wanna fight, you better run for your life>>). E' l’amore finito, tormentato, contrastato, sfortunato e ambivalente, quello che si alimenta della dicotomia amore-odio e del rapporto conflittuale tra i sessi, a costituire la linfa vitale delle tracce dell’album. Canzoni come Songs Like This (<<and if it wasn’t for guys like you there wouldn’t be song like this/ and if you hadn’t gone and done me wrong I wouldn’t go off like this/ even I’m surprised how easy sweet revenge rolls off my lips>>), Unapologize (<<I unapologize/I meant every world/won’t take back the way I feel about you/I can’t unsay what you heard/ ‘cause you heard me right and I won’t try to fight them back or hide my feelings for you/I unapologize>>), Someday When I Stop Loving You (<<It’ll break my heart but I’ll get through/someday when I stop loving you>>) e What Can I Say (<<And I’m not sorry that it’s over but for the way we let it end/so I said all I had to say in letters that I threw away>>) ne sono un esempio, anche se poi è la scanzonata ed allegra (almeno nella melodia) Quitter a rappresentare esplicitamente il tema della labilità del sentimento amoroso (<<Here’s how it goes/boy meets girl/girl leaves boy/that’s all I know/all I’ve done in my life>>).

Ma l’amore cantato dalla Underwood è anche quello puro ed innocente per la propria madre, espresso nel momento del distacco, in Mama’s Song (<<Mama there’s no way you’ll ever lose me/and living me away is not goodbye/as you watch me walk down to my future/I hope tears of joy are in your eyes>>), o quello per il prossimo che porta a pensare di poter migliorare le condizioni in cui versa l’umanità in Change (<<”You’re just a fool, just a fool you believe you can change the world”/don’t listen to them when they say/”You’re just a fool, just a fool to believe you can change the world”/oh, the smallest thing can make all the difference/love is alive, don’t listen to them when they say:”you’re just a fool, just a fool to believe you can cahnge the worl”>>). E se il ritmo decisamente country di Undo It e This Time, insieme a quello trascinante di Songs Like This, si rivelano irresistibili, è ancora nella ballad Temporary Home che la cantante di Checotah (Oklahoma) ritrova quell’ispirazione che ci avvicina alla commozione (<<This is our temporary home/it’s not where we belong/windows and rooms that we’re passing through/this is just a stop, on the way to were we’re going/I’m not afraid because I know this is our temporary home>>).
Tra gli autori dei brani, oltre alla stessa Underwood, figurano alcuni dei più rinomati compositori del panorama country e pop. tra cui Brett James, Katrina Elam, Max Martin, Kara DioGuardi e Chantal Kreviazuk.
Dopo due album di notevole successo alle spalle, Carrie Underwood si conferma con Play On uno dei nuovi talenti della scena country contemporanea.
